The United Arab Emirates is a big place, and petrol can be expensive. If you’re a motorist in the UAE, you may be wondering how you can save money on fuel in order to make your daily commute a little cheaper. If so, you’ll be pleased to hear that Gulf News recently published a list of tips for saving fuel when driving around the UAE. We’ve collated these tips with other pieces of advice from reputable sources to provide you with a straightforward guide to cutting down on your petrol costs.
1. Pay attention to the weather
Because the weather in the UAE is usually so warm – with an average temperature of 41 degrees Celsius in the summer – many drivers get into the habit of keeping their air conditioning on constantly – not a problem we have in the UK. This wastes a lot of fuel. Pay attention to the ambient temperature and turn off your AC whenever the weather is cool enough. Even if you can only turn off your air conditioning once every few days, you’ll end up saving a lot of money on fuel over the course of the year.
Many people carry a lot of items that aren’t really necessary in the boots of their cars. This added weight causes vehicles to burn more fuel. Check your boot every few weeks to make sure you’re not carrying any heavy items that you might have forgotten about. If you are, put them in the house – especially those golf clubs – your car will use petrol more efficiently if it doesn’t have to carry as much weight.
3. Turn off the engine whenever possible
Whenever you need to stop your car for a few minutes (for example, to drop someone off or unload goods), we recommend turning off the engine. Even leaving it running for a few minutes wastes petrol.
4. Downsize your car
Of course, if you really want to save money on petrol, the easiest way to do it is to invest in a smaller, more fuel-efficient car.
